Hi Bob,
I want to thank you for publishing your "Marine Fish Health & Feeding Handbook," as it is a precious help. You convinced me to prepare a quarantine and hospital tank and use it for my next purchases before they enter my main tank. You seem somewhat doubtful about the use of UV in a fish-only tank, but what is your opinion at high-level UV sterilization in the quarantine tank?

Thanks for your inquiry and kind words about the book. As for UV in the fish-only aquarium, I see nothing wrong there with that application. But in the reef aquarium, constant use of UV will destroy some of the valuable microorganism that corals feed upon. However, if bothered with troublesome algae or parasites, it will be helpful if used correctly. As for its use in a quarantine tank, ozone dispensed through a skimmer is quite valuable, as it minimizes troublesome bacterium and parasites that without it's sanitizing might become more problematic. Therefore, in quarantine tanks, I think it an excellent addition to maintaining quality seawater and getting new arrivals more effectively through the quarantine timeframe.
